MONTEREY, Calif. — October 29, 2026. The Littlefield Road hairpin is the focus of Aguajito Oaks’ only named neighborhood proposal in Monterey’s 2026–27 improvement program. Application AO-01 requests one additional streetlight at the bend, with a preliminary cost estimate of $75,000. Residents have raised concerns about the visibility of this hillside turn, but the proposal has not been funded or built.
Why this specific bend matters
Aguajito Oaks is a Monterey residential neighborhood with winding approach roads rather than the straight blocks of a downtown district. A streetlight at a tight curve could help drivers and pedestrians identify the bend after dark. The application does not provide evidence of a measured crash reduction, however, and does not replace a professional lighting or traffic assessment.
The ownership and light-color questions
City staff flagged a threshold issue: officials need to determine whether the proposed pole would stand in city right-of-way or on property owned by the homeowners association. Staff also noted that the Planning Department would need to consider the light temperature. Those questions affect feasibility, possible permissions and how a fixture would fit into the residential streetscape.
What happens next for this neighborhood?
Project AO-01 remained listed in the October 28 second-review packet. The NCIP Committee is scheduled to rank nominations on November 18; that vote would be a recommendation stage, not proof of installation. Neighbors can check the city agenda and offer relevant observations about the turn’s visibility.
Official record: City of Monterey, NCIP Committee October 28, 2026 second-review agenda packet, project AO-01 (PDF). The city lists November 18, 2026 NCIP project ranking as an upcoming committee meeting. Cost figures are preliminary estimates, not awarded funding.
